Inspired by true events. Anaarkali, is played by the lovely Swara Bhaskar.
As young Anaarkali grows up she is found out to have a great talent of singing and then is pushed into the performing industry. To the excitement of the management, a young girl with a sexy voice means big bucks and promotion.
She is a local travelling performer who goes around to different villages to entertain their regional communities. It showcases the life of female stage performers also called “nautch” girls.
As these artists are mostly known for their obscene lyrics and dance moves.
Showing the mindsets, behaviours and responses from the audiences you can only imagine that go with the job with an audience of mostly men. Some of the performers are rumoured to offer the services to members of the community for a price after the show.
Expresses the mistreatment and malice towards women in India as well as in this specific industry.
The daily abuse and lack of respect from the talent manager (played by Sanjay Mishra) are truly sickening but a reality. You certainly love to hate him even from the beginning and more so throughout the film.
The opening scenes feature a shocking and surprising scene.
Anaarkali is attempting to stand up for herself and her rights. Her right to the money she has earned and well as the right to her own body. In defending these privileges she finds herself on the run from her manager and from the police as well.
Our director has also taken over the job of writing the screenplay and some of the music for the film as well. The director and Swara did a wonderful job tackling not only this genre but the subject of mistreatment among these performers. Swara does a great job of telling a raw, honest story of Anaarkali.
A beautiful balance of colourful entertainment with reality. It’s a very well made film with a message.
Music for “Anaarkali of Aarah” is by Rohit Sharma. With the lyrics written by a talented group including the following: Ramkumar Singh, Ravinder Randhawa, Prashant Ingole, Dr Sagar. With the Zee Music Company as chief soundtrack producers. The songs featured on the soundtrack include folk and regionally inspired ones as well.
The film brings a not that well-known topic to the forefront. It is a tale of women’s empowerment and standing up for your rights no matter what industry you’re in. The film touts every women’s right to say no to any unwanted advances. At the same time, the film is difficult to watch its message is worth sharing.
