A Mumbai court has recently discharged Australian national Paul Bartels from a drug case linked to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigations.
Sushant Singh Rajput case: Mumbai court acquits Australian national in drug probe
Insufficient Evidence Leads to Acquittal
According to a PTI report, Bartels, a friend of Agisilaos Demetriades, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in November 2020 as part of its probe into alleged drug use within Bollywood. However, after a thorough examination of the case, Special Judge Mahesh Jadhav found insufficient evidence to link Bartels to the drug-related offenses.
The court’s recent order highlighted that Bartels’ arrest was primarily based on statements from co-accused individuals, which are not admissible evidence without independent corroboration. With no such evidence presented, the court concluded that there were insufficient grounds to proceed with the case against Bartels.
Ongoing Investigations by CBI
This development does not affect the overall investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues to probe the circumstances surrounding the actor’s demise, initially reported as suicide.
The drug angle of the case, which garnered significant media attention, has led to several arrests and developments. Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging in his Bandra apartment on June 14, 2020, and the CBI is investigating the allegations of suicide.
