Director: Michael Sarnoski
Synopsis
A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE follows the story of Sam (played by Lupita Nyong’o), a terminally ill patient, and Reuben (played by Alex Wolff), who bond during an extra-terrestrial attack. Sam resides in Little First Hospice outside New York City and agrees to join Reuben on an outing to Manhattan under the condition of being treated with pizza. While in the city, they witness a puppet show before it gets attacked by hostile extra-terrestrial creatures.
Story Review
The storyline by John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski is repetitive, lacking in impact despite some thrilling moments. The minimal dialogues, a trademark of this series, are disappointing without subtitles. Sarnoski’s direction sets an eerie atmosphere using the city’s infrastructure to enhance the chaos, but the film falls short in offering innovation, feeling longer than its 99-minute runtime.
The portrayal of characters like Sam by Lupita Nyong’o and Eric by Joseph Quinn showcases strong performances, although the film fails to fully utilize Djimon Hounsou’s potential as Henri. The scene of Sam and Eric in the club feels out of place, and the ease with which US authorities grasp the need for silence raises eyebrows.
Technical Aspects
Alexis Grapsas’ minimal yet impactful music, Pat Scola’s thrilling cinematography, and Simon Bowles’ top-tier production design enhance the film’s visual appeal. VFX stands out, with the action being less gory this time. However, the slow pacing of Andrew Mondshein and Gregory Plotkin’s editing detracts from the overall experience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE struggles to offer anything fresh, feeling like a forced prequel with little to distinguish itself from its predecessors.
